Luz Herrera, Attorney at Law

Luz E. Herrera is a graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School. Ms. Herrera opened her law practice in May 2002. The Law Office of Luz E. Herrera focuses on representing small businesses, entrepreneurs and nonprofits on matters related to entity formation, corporate governance, asset acquisition, contracts and real estate. Attorney Herrera regularly participates in workshops and trainings for small business owners through organizations such as the Small Business Development Center, the National Latina Business Women’s Association, local chambers of commerce and business associations. The Law Office of Luz E. Herrera also advises individuals on family related issues such as estate planning, child custody, child support and marital dissolutions.

Attorney Herrera began her law career as an associate in the real estate department of a large San Francisco based law firm where she represented financial institutions, landlords, tenants and property owners in real estate financing, leasing and sale transactions. She has worked as a contract attorney for the law firms of Salvador Alva, Beltran & Medina and Escovar, Avila, Christopher & Ruiz, LLP. Miss Herrera has provided consulting services for several organizations including to the William C. Velasquez Institute and Emerging Markets, Inc.

While at Harvard, Ms. Herrera worked as a law clerk for one year with the Hale and Dorr Services Center’s Economic Development Project. During her summer as a law student, Ms. Herrera worked with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund in San Francisco and with the City Attorney’s Office for the City of Los Angeles. Ms. Herrera was sworn in as a member of the State Bar of California in June 2000.

Attorney Herrera grew up wanting to help working class people and immigrants navigate the legal system. Her passions were inspired by the work of civil rights activists and community lawyers. Ms. Herrera attributes her interest in helping families, small businesses and nonprofits to her working-class upbringing. She was born in Tijuana, Mexico and is an only child of Juan and Esperanza Herrera.

Luz E. Herrera is currently on a one year sabbatical from her law practice in California as she completes a clinical fellowship in the Community Enterprise Project at the Hale and Dorr Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School. Ms. Herrera plans to return to California in the summer of 2007.
